Headteacher’s Welcome

Welcome from Helen Burton, Headteacher

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Belmont Community School.  As you browse our website, I hope you get a feel for the type of school we are.  We are comprehensive, diverse, inclusive, high achieving and proud of our students and staff. The school ethos is summed up by “The Belmont Way”, through which students are taught how to and are given the opportunities to “Work Hard, Contribute and Respect Others”.  The school is highly popular amongst local parents, being oversubscribed on first choices, with a healthy waiting list of students wanting to transfer in.

Work Hard

We have the very highest aspirations for our students and staff. We firmly believe a strong work ethic is the foundation to success in life.  Consequently, our students have a history of success in those traditional subjects most valued by our parents, employers, further and higher education establishments.  For example, alongside English Language, English Literature, the Sciences and the Humanities, all students study a language to GCSE.

Contribute

We want our students to engage with and learn from a wider set of experiences. Students are given the opportunity to compete in a wide range of activities including the House system. They are also encouraged to make the most of our international links.  We have vibrant traditions in both the performing arts and sporting arenas, with a multitude of concerts, recitals, musicals and competitions taking place across the year.  As it says in our name, we are a community school.  We encourage our students to play active roles in their local communities, through participation in the Durham Youth Council or organising events for local charities.

Respect Others

All the above combined with politeness, responsibility and above all respect make Belmont a great place to learn. We show we care by having the very highest expectations of students in everything they do. For staff, Belmont is a great place to work with a thriving team spirit, where staff go the extra mile for their students.  We are proud of our status as a School of Sanctuary and our recent accreditation with the International School Award.

School of the future

As I write this message, our new school is well on its way to completion.  In the autumn of 2024, we shall move into state of the art facilities.  The new school will be ultra low carbon and very environmentally friendly. Most importantly however, it will provide the community with a building fit for a world class education for generations to come.  Alongside the school building, the project will include world class sporting facilities.
